Brief Christening Gown History. In the late 18th Century the lawn, a gown that is longer than the baby and fancier than a traditional day gown, was the forerunner to the christening gown of today. The church, as today, insisted on white to symbolize purity and innocence. The gowns were lovingly made from satin, silk and cotton and were embellished with embroidery, ribbons and smocking. Today's tradition of christening gowns and outfits embraces the 18th Century styles and also includes the more modern outfits and suits for little boys that are popular today.
